Modern Parenting

Recently I listened to a young mother discussing with her ten-year-old or thereby on what they would prepare for supper and smiled in amusement. Modern Parenting is so diplomatic. I almost wonder if soon people will seek consent from those they are giving birth to. Indeed I heard one rude teenage boy telling the mother that he never sent her application to give birth to him. The mother was inconsolable. Anyway back to my musing hehehee …. I want to tell you how my mother used to cook for us. She would walk to the shamba and Identify a green banana ready for cooking. She would cut it and bring it home .she would prepare it and put it in the sufuria to boil. The only expected debate was whether you were full ( subject to whether there were any remaining boiled bananas). Questions were not expected or entertained. The family would eat what was available until it got exhausted. The menu read like, boiled bananas, boiled Cassava, boiled arrowroots, Githeri (which is a mixture of boiled maize and beans) boiled sweet potatoes. Those asking questions about the menu risked missing out on the meals and getting a thorough spanking for disrespect and showing God the stomach*(Kikuyus will understand kuonia Ngai Nda) when thousands had nothing to eat ??. Nowadays a mother can’t cook without consulting the children. What a pampered generation.
