The term gay is mostly used to refer to men who are homosexual. A lot has been said about gay people and the debate will never end. This is because people hold diverse views. In most African and Arab countries homosexual is frowned at. However in most European countries and United State of America laws have enacted to allow gay people to regularize their relationship in form of marriage.
Are People Born Gay or Do They Become Gay
The issue is as old as mankind and there can never be agreement on whether one is born as a gay or it is an acquired behavior. The debate will be guided by one’s background and upbringing. In the conservative families children and parents will not have such a discussion which in most cases will be seen as an abomination. The children will be left to their own devices where they will discover about their sexuality either by default or from friends while in schools or in places of worship.
In the liberal families discussions can be held and parents will be on the lookout to identify their children’s sexual orientation. I have seen some parents even undergoing sex change long after they have gotten children. For example Chris Jenner an American father went through Sex change. I believe there was a discussion with his adult children about it.
But where families are very conservative the gay children will do it secretly and will be ashamed of their sexual orientation. However the bible in several instances mention homosexuals. Even if it is condemnation, the fact that it is mentioned say a lot about the topic. This is a clear indication that it used to happen whether in secret or in the open.
Is Gayism African?
This cannot be said to be African because most of it came into the limelight either after people had gone abroad and rediscovered their sexual orientation or after tourists came to the country and hooked up with people. But maybe it has been happening for long in Africa probably in secret. However it is frowned at by most of the people. When late Wainaina came out to say he was gay he confessed that he was shunned by some of his friends. This could probably explain why people don’t come out in African countries.
Some countries such as Uganda have hostile legislations against gay people. South Africa has however allowed gay people to get married if they so wish.
Unlike other family setting of mother, father and children and children, gayism is seen to be a bit elitist in nature due to the fact that it is mostly open among those who are the cream of the society.
My personal feeling is to live and let live. Life is too short to waste it in unnecessary battles especially of thing that can’t be changed. I am a mother of a son and a daughters. I am living my life and have no wish to spend my life fighting those who make it worth living.
